Joe Midgely
Joe is an accomplished horseman regularly competing on the Western circuit in the UK Ranch and Reining events. Joe has a deep understanding of horsemanship and Western riding and we are delighted to have him teaching on our horses.
‘The development of western riding, and bringing more riders into this wonderful sport is something I’m so very passionate about. I’m very excited to be teaching the next generation of western riders on some fantastic horses here at West Drive Quarter horses!’
Coming from a showjumping and English showing family, Joe didn’t start riding Western until age 14. His competitive success started at 16, when he won a gold, 3 silver and a bronze medal for Great Britain. At 19, Joe made his first trip to the US, as a competitor on RFD TV’s ‘Horsemanship Showdown’, Joe emerged as one of the winners of the showdown, and continued to visit the US to learn from master Western horseman such as 4x World Champion of Road to the Horse, Chris Cox, and world renowned student of Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman.
Back in the UK, Joe began a business starting young horses, and rehabilitating problematic horses for a number of years. Competitively, Joe has been competing in the Reining and Ranch Riding in the UK for 8 years, winning the UK Ranch Riding Futurity, along with numerous National Championships and end of season National High Points.
Joe is a qualified bit fitter, and the only Western specialising bit fitter in the UK. He travels the UK running clinics, demonstrations and private lessons. Joe also trains English horses, mostly in dressage, having had the opportunity to work with some of the UK’s top Olympic and Paralympic riders. Most notably, Joe started George Clooney B.S who belonged to the Moodys at the time. George went on to win multiple FEI medals all across Europe.
Lauren Bustin
Lauren spent her childhood riding jumpers and event horses before she came to Sudbrooke in 2021 and quickly adapted to Western Riding. Lauren is an integral part of our calf rearing operation, she knows our horses inside and out and uses them to handle our cattle multiple times each week.
Lauren has learned from European and American clinicians during her time here and has competed in the Cow Horse since its infancy in the UK, winning the Open Bridle class in 2023. Lauren has gone on to have future successes in the Trail and Herd Work and remains a fierce competitor in the Open Bridle classes at the affiliated shows.
Tom Wilkinson
Tom is one of the founders of SPCC and West Drive Quarter Horses.
Passionate about breeding, training and showing Cow Horses since 2013, Tom continues to learn from great horsemen and horsewomen from all over the world whenever he can. Tom competes in the ERCHA Cow Horse classes, showing multiple horses at each show, as well as coaching clients and helping to prepare their horses. Tom won the hotly contested Open Bridle Spectacular along with the Novice Horse class in 2025. He has a broad understanding of Western horsemanship and develops young horses for a range of Western disciplines.
Tom will be available for a limited number of lessons at weekends only.
Meet Our Horses
Falco
2013 Buckskin Gelding
The first horse Tom ever started, Falco, has always been a level headed and gentle soul. He’s got a trot that’s like riding on a cloud and is a steady and dependable mount. Often seen turning back at shows and clinics he’s also had success in the Green as Grass classes in the Ranch Horse Challenge.

Rubin
2018 Black Gelding
Rubin was bought as a weanling in 2018 as a gift for Chloe from Tom. At 16′ he has made a name for himself as a gentle giant. He’s got a big rolling lope and an even bigger heart. He’s known as ‘the bouncer of the forcing pen’ and will push ornery cows down the race with his chest when they don’t want to move. In fact, when working the crush, you can pretty much put him on auto pilot and let him do the job for you!

Charlie
2015 Chestnut Gelding
Originally bought for Tom’s brother, Jack, Charlie has become part of the furniture here at SPCC. He has been shown in both the ERCHA Cow Horse shows and the Ranch Horse Challenge, winning the 2024 event with Tom in the saddle. He’s a real schoolmaster and he loves to stop and draw back with a cow.

Dylan
2012 Bay Gelding
Dylan is the herd boss and is a gentle and fair leader. Bred to rein he has always shown interest in cattle. Tom has shown him in Ranch Riding, Cow Horse and Reining over the years until Lauren took the reins for the 2024/2025 Cow Horse season. He is a laid back character but knows all the moves when you push the right buttons.

Penny
2014 Bay Mare
Penny is the little mare with the big engine. Fast-footed and ferocious on a cow this mare doesn’t know how to quit on you and will always find more gas in the tank! Tom has shown her in the Cow Horse for the past 4 years winning the ERCHA European Bridle Horse Championship in 2025. She has won every herd work class she’s ever entered.

Herbie
2012 Bay Gelding
Originally bred as a reiner, Chloe’s show horse, Herbie, has always been electric on cattle. He’s a big moving horse and can throw shapes that make you grip the saddle horn as well as your bum cheeks! When you put him in front of a cow you’d better be prepared for the ride.
